Monday- Thursday 8:30 AM- 4:00 PM

One of the many roles of adolescents is to find their place in society. It is a time of significant social development, independence, critical thinking, and self-assessment while connecting to physical, mental, emotional, and social maturation. The needs they are encountering are much different than those of an elementary classroom. This is a time of profound and rapid advancement.

Adolescence is a delicate time when the teen must be prepared for adulthood. It is a confusing time when the body betrays the child, and hormones become promenade. Adults often treat the adolescent as if they were still young children. “The adolescent must never be treated as a child, for that is a stage of life that he has surpassed. It is better to treat an adolescent as if he had greater value than he shows than if he had less and let him feel his merits and self-respect are disregarded.” -Dr. Maria Montessori

At Great Work Montessori, we will help support and promote the re-birth that is taking place within this stage of development. The adult guide will work alongside the students learning together, as they are respected and supported to take leadership roles within the community. Students will have freedom for creative expression, real work with authentic opportunities, and project-based learning while developing a sense of belonging. “Education should therefore include the two forms of work, manual and intellectual, for the same person, and thus make it understood by practical experience that these two kinds complete each other and are equally essential to a civilized existence. ”

Maria Montessori
From Childhood to Adolescence, p. 65

In addition to the four pillars of academics, ELA, Science, Social Studies, and Math, we will provide extra-curricular work to enhance their introduction into the adult world, giving the students a solid foundation for transitioning from adolescence to young adulthood. As each student develops a new sense of autonomy and decision-making, they will become aware of their interdependence and impact on their community within the program and the community in which they live. Students will be encouraged to pursue entrepreneurial ideas and activities by running their own businesses, given real-life experiences, and placed into leadership roles.

The awareness of those less fortunate and the implementation of service-learning activities help students become better critical thinkers, empathetic and compassionate, and have a sense of social responsibility and citizen skills while committing to service. At every opportunity, the student is provided with a positive approach to global issues that moves us toward diversity based on cooperation and respect, reaching a unified world. This curriculum is an education for peace. In Maria Montessori’s book Education and Peace, she states that humans can only succeed when they learn how to live cooperatively with social discipline and balance. “A subject that, were it to become a special discipline, would be the noblest one of all, for the very life of humanity depends on it.”

This program is for the homeschooling community and those seeking an alternative to traditional schooling. The program runs from Monday-Thursday, 8:30 AM-4:00 PM. This is a four-day-a-week program. Grades are optional and can be used to help show progress, but this program emphasizes mastery of concepts and outcomes. It is the role of the Guide/Teacher to facilitate the student's intellectual, emotional, social, spiritual, and physical growth.
